Instructor Bio - Terry Sunderlin
In 1979 Terry decided to become a full fledged Scuba Instructor and went out to Commander Jim William’s “PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) College” in San Diego, California. Progressing through the Advanced Scuba Diver, Rescue Diver, Divemaster, and Assistant Instructor Ratings, Terry became an Open Water Scuba Instructor in August of 1979. He also picked up the following Scuba Diver Specialty Ratings: Underwater Photographer, Deep Diver, Night Diver, Search and Recovery Diver, Underwater Hunting and Collecting, Archaeological Research Diver, and Equipment Specialist. He is also certified to teach these Specialty Diver Certifications. Along the way, certifying many divers, Terry earned the “coveted” Master Scuba Instructor Rating from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Among his many diving adventures in North Carolina he also became an Instructor for NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors).
Terry Sunderlin has been an avid scuba diver since 1973. Growing up in the Midwest and being a victim of the enthrallment of “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau,” Terry was drawn to diving and got certified in some of the leftover Glacial Lakes in Northwest Iowa.
Terry has dove many places of the world and has taught Scuba Diving in Alabama, California, the Northern Gulf Coast of Florida, the Crystal Clear Waters of the Northern Florida Springs, Key West, the Florida Keys, North Carolina, Germany, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. In North Carolina he dove some of the many shipwrecks that lie in the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” but also some of the crystal clear waters of some of the inland quarries. In the Caribbean he worked as a Scuba Instructor in Grand Cayman, Haiti, and Saint Eustatius. In Hawaii he and his wife owned and operated a small scuba operation known as “Dive Kauai” on the Island of Kauai for over 3 years.
Terry has worked with numerous Scuba Diving Professionals over the years and has gained both experience and admiration for these Scuba Enthusiasts! Among these include George Perez (aka Mr. Scuba) in Alabama, the former Alan Baskin of “Baskin in the Sun” in Haiti, and Roby Anas in North Carolina.
Terry is a Master Scuba Instructor with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), an instructor with the Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA), and a Master Repair Technician with the International Association of Repair Technicians (IAST). Although not Active, he is also a Scuba Instructor with the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI).
